Our local Triumph club was invited to see a demonstration of Metal Mender's.
This sounds like the same type of outfit. There were several restorations going
on at the time and we got to see the process using a rusted TR3 gas tank. The
wire that was used is fifteen percent zinc and is said to protect the metal from
further rusting. Very impressive! The areas to be worked on must be sandblasted
clean and the welding process seemed to take very little time. Most interesting
is that you don't even have to have an entire panel. It can be applied over a
copper spoon for small holes and even cardboard forms for very large areas. It
looks like a combination of a plasma cutter and wirefeed welder.
Two electrode wires are used with compressed air. The surface of the gas tank
was never too hot to touch. I've got some pictures if you want me to send by
e-mail.
