Thanks to all who responded to my question regarding pulling the trans to
put a new starter ring gear on my TR6's flywheel.

I repaired the ring gear using an alternative method that only took about 45
minutes.

First, you have to pull the starter and tunnel cover in the car. You will
notice how the bell housing of the trans is shaped for the starter to fit on
the passenger side. Directly behind this shaped area is a flat section in
the bellhousing. I drilled a half inch hole in the middle of this flat
section. Then using a punch, moved the starter ring back against the
flywheel flange. I had an assistant watch under the car to ensure that the
ring gear was flush against the flywheel and made sure that no teeth were
missing from the ring gear. Very little filings got in the bellhousing, but
some grease on a rag with a stick picked up most of those. The job was
finished with a rubber plug (1/2"). I now have an access hole if this ever
happens again.

Removing and replacing the starter and interior bits probably added another
2 hours to the project. But this is a substantial savings over pulling the
trans, flywheel, etc.

Thanks,

Bob
