You'll receive plenty of advice from the list on whether its better to use
mineral or
synthetic. What's more, both parties will tell you their choice is the best
because ...
The oil officially recommended by Rover and British Motor Heritage for this
engine that's
still currently available in Europe is Duckhams Q20/50 or Castrol 'Classic' XL
20/50.
As long as the description on the can cross-refers to API-SF or API-SG (the US
standard)
or ACEA-A2 (European standard) you'll be OK. ACEA-A1 might not be entirely
suitable as its
designed for modern engines and has certain additives in it that are hostile to
conditions
found in your power unit. Go for an A2 spec. If you see CCMC on the can, this
is the old
European standard abandoned in 1996 and doesn't really mean all that much.
Obviously keep
your oil filter changed regularly and you may find it beneficial to buy a
spin-on oil
filter adaptor so you can use the better spin-on type of filter. It all depends
on what
you want in terms of original appearance in the engine bay. Personally
speaking, the
original look isn't too important for me - I prefer modern filter technology
and virtually
instant oil pressure. You might want to consider fitting a now pressure relief
valve that
operates when pressure falls to about 25psi instead of the 'too late' level of
about 5
psi - and a magnetic sump plug is always a good idea.
