FWIW:
I work for a large hi-tech company with a world wide intranet with
controlled access to the internet - my work PC is thus very secure.
At home I have a dial-up to the internet (three different ones to
be precise). I became a believer in the nasty habits of a few
individuals some time ago. As a consequence I purchased
BlackIce from http://networkice.com (~40.00US), Norton AntiVirus.
and downloaded the freeware program AtGuard. I am as safe as I can
be on a PC that is forced to run a Microsoft OS (I have to run
certain applications at home as well as at work - Linux is much
better).
If you are concerned about privacy, security, and control of the
information on your PC, then these are the least that you should do.
This is of course, all IMHO.
