My 1980 Spit has 2 5.25" co-axials upfront and 2 6x9's in the back. The front
spkrs are mounted in the footwells in small, thin boxes that are angled towards
the interior. They are probably available at any stereo shop. There is a
distinct loss of fedelity since the high frequencies are directed at your feet
instead of your head. The rear speakers have been mounted on a replacement rear
panel that fits behind the seats. I still have the original unmolested panel.
The wires can easily be run under the carpet down the passenger side of the
car. The overall result is only mounting holes for the front spkr boxes. This
is how I bought the car. Personally, since the dash has suffered the rigors of
our wonderful friend Sol and split, I would consider drilling holes (using a
template) in the top surface and mount the spkrs under the dash. This basically
emulates the common mounting practice of auto mfrs. The high frequencies now
bounce off the windshield and dance into your ears. Got an old top panel
