Bob,
It's really best if you can hang the part in the oven if you want to do
both sides because any part of the object that contacts the hot racks will
leave the powder on the rack, not the part. I've done my oil pan and valve
cover by first blocking off the insides of both by cutting some aluminum (
I used cheap roof flashing) to fit the inside dimension and taping it to
the part with the hi-temp silicone tape. I can then lay the part directly
on the racks so it will sit on the aluminum. I really didn't want to coat
the insides of either of these, but to be able to just lay the part on the
hot rack was definitely a bonus. It makes it somewhat difficult to place a
part in a 400 degree oven, so I wear heavy welder's gloves. In the case of
the wheels, why not go ahead and coat both sides then lay in the oven on a
rack on the backside and then recoat the areas where the wheel touched the
rack and reheat to touch up those areas. This is acceptable, but I have not
had to do this as of yet. I am ecstatic about all the parts I have coated
so far and everyone else is amazed at the results also. As with any metal
finishing, the prep work is the most important to a good finish. Be sure to
get some metal-prep and clean your new part after sandblasting to remove
any residual grease and oil and try not to handle the part with your bare
fingers after prepping. I can't wait to get my hands on some hi-temp
manifold P/C to do my exhaust manifold and down-pipes.
I know I have a lot of new friends all of a sudden who need this or that
powder coated!
