Fuel Line Thread Sealant

I just replaced my fuel pump on my '74 TR6. One of my threaded fuel line 
connections sealed nicely and the other did not. I painted a light coat of 
Permatex gasket sealer(the red stringy stuff that comes in a can with a brush) 
as it said it did not break down with gas and said it was an excellent thread 
sealer. Should I have used the the stretchy white tape thread sealer stuff(I 
forget what its called) instead?
