There is hardly any in the crown gear/pinion, but there seems to be

I ran into a very similar problem with my TR3A. I bought replacement thrust
washers from TRF. The differential side gear thrust washers didn't need to
be replaced. The differential pinion gear thrust washers (look like belville
washers) were available in various oversizes. I think TRF had them listed
under TR6 where they're "official" replacement parts. You can also get them
from VB or Moss. I picked up a range of sizes and kept trying thicker
washers until I was comfortable with how tight the diff was. I still have
the parts I didn't use if you're interested.
