Obviously, some folks never got near a laundry in their student
employment days... a mangle (aptly named) is a big steam iron press, the
sort big enough to do all of a pair of pants, or a dress, in one plunge.
In the UK, it may mean something else entirely, but here, in the US,
that's a mangle. (!)
