Haven't tried the hand cream bottle idea, but Harbor Freight sells a cheap
oversize pump oil can, with a plastic hose for a spout.  It works pretty
good for filling lever shocks and rear ends, should also work OK for filling
transmissions.

(Fortunately for me, my current transmission has a dipstick, and I fully
intend to add a dipstick to the next one !)
