Actually, Peter, There are bacteria that metabolize petroleum. So
oil and grease are, to some extent, biodegradeable. Of course, if
you dumpa ocean going tanker full into a small bay you will over
load the system. Just like when you put too much sugar in something
the microbes can't eat that either.
The solution to polution is dilution. Sometimes.
