Hi, Steve,
The time is here, and I will be redoing the front suspension on the TR6
this winter. I would have done this lsast winter but replaced the head
gasket instead, thanks to al who advised on how to get the stuck head
off, the rope worked very well.
My question at this time is what type of bushings to use. I would like
to think I'll Auto cross the car occasionally, but mostly I only drive
on very rough roads, live in Pa. Are the various "plastic" bushes
really much better than the rubber? Who has the best, i.e. price,
availability, quality??? Suggest away.
I did this job on my Reliant Scimitar-a car which uses TR6-based front
suspension but is much heavier and uses up bushes like crazy.
I tried the Nylon/steel sleeve type first. These were practically
bullet-proof and gave superb location. But...they were noisy and transmitted
a lot of tyre bump-thump/noise to the car. After a year, I changed to
Superflex Poly bushes. These were a bit noisy used dry but were nearly as
good as the Nylons at location. On balance, the poly bushes are a better
compromise.
I'll also be replacing the shocks any suggestions on brand and sources?
I use AVO shocks wherever possible-don't know about availability outside the
UK. They are a bit like Spax but handbuilt, with big, knurled adjusters
which don't seize.
Finally, I have considered putting stainless steal brake lines on, just
as an early millenium gift to the car. Thoughts on this?
I presume you mean hoses, rather than lines. I've used Aeroquip, which give
a really firm pedal or, on DOT 5, an acceptably firm pedal. Word of
warning-the steel braid outers are structural so you must inspect them
regularly. Nicks or damage can cause a burst, as the braiding contains the
pressure in the hose.
