You can crow bar a late box into an early car. Thank you for your
analytical genious. However I must tell you that forcing the late box
into the early car forces the fan hub closer to the radiator,
fatigues the motor mounts and makes changing a belt next to impossible.
Thirty years of experience proves this is not a good thing to do.
Relieving the rear motor mount and mounting bracket takes less time than
replacing/realigning the radiator. Plus 9 times out of 10 you run into
engine hitting crossbar or radiator when braking hard if you are anal
enough to shoe horn the late box into the early configuration. for the
record relieve the holes in the motor mout by 3/8 " as well as the holes
in the motor mount mounting bracket to allow the engine /trans rest
referenced to the unstressed front mounts. The later crossmember
mounting braket bolts right in and everything but the shift boot lines
up. Now no more of this I think stuff now you know it won't work.

Rule of thumb in working with nuts and bolts is... If you have to force
it than somethings not right.
