Help!
My 64 TR4 has been running like a top until now. The only thing that is
different is that I changed the oil, filter & antifreeze this weekend. Now
it stumbles like mad whenever I hit the gas hard. If I baby the accelerator
and work the clutch real slow, it is OK. But any sort of quick acceleration
makes it cough, sputter and hesitate, both in neutral and in gear, both when
cold and when warmed up. It runs fine at 1000, 2000, or 3000 rpm as long as
I don't punch the gas too hard.
Is it starved for fuel? Could the fuel pump be going out? Maybe electrical,
it hasn't had a distributor tune up in a few years. I did check the plugs,
they look fine.
I noticed one strange thing during the oil filter change. I have the spin on
adapter, using a fram PH3600. When I took off the old filter, the screw-on
fitting part of the adapter came off with the filter. I screwed it back into
the new filter to loosen up the threads, and then used the filter as a wrench
to screw the fitting back into the adapter. The fitting has six holes to
pass oil through, could it be that the holes are not lined up to the fitting.
Oil pressure is the same as before - 50 lbs. when warm, and a little higher
at startup, or when accelerating.
I realize that it is hard to diagnose without being able to hear the car, but
any help, even guesses would be most appreciated.
