Listers,
I am currently involved in building a lightweight overdrive gearbox
based on the early Herald/Standard 10 all-alloy casing. The 948 gearset has
a wide gap between 2nd and 3rd gear, but in other respects is ideal,
allowing us to fit a higher ratio final drive without losing flexibility
lower down. Is there any way we can use the overdrive (D-type) on 2nd gear?
I'm aware that Overdrive pressure is dependant upon the gear speed, but I
remember some of the earlier TR's had A-type overdrives which operated on
2nd. I also knew a guy years back who had a Vitesse 6 with the switching
modified to work on 2nd, but I don't know how succesful it was. Our other
concern is whether the overdrive would handle the torque produced in 2nd
gear.
The engine used is an SAH tuned 1147cc unit with a single weber
(type?). The vehicle is a 1964 Bond Equipe 2+2, weighing around 13cwt.
Any advice will be appreciated,
Cheers,
Bill.
