I'm well into the rebuild job. Took in all your good comments a few months
back and have decided to :go for it. Had the cam reground to "D" specs by Ted
Schumaker and now have the block and head in the shop. The crank is pretty
beat so will have to fit oversized bearings, I guess. I am shaving the head
to achieve 10:1 compression required by this cam. I'll than attempt the
porting with a hand grinder. As my kids say, I'm psyched.
Question: the head appears to have been surfaced at least once. How do I know
how much to shave without going too far? Is there a spec for the stock
thickness of the head? Do I just wing it and take a hair less than the
Krastner manual suggests?
On a very different level, I'm using this time to clean up the engine
compartment and components. So, what are the "correct"colors? The spare
engine I have is orange...that can't be original color, can it? Is virtually
everything gloss black, from the frame to the individual components like
water pump and pulley, cross bar, etc, except for the cast alum pieces. Of
course the inside body pieces are the car color.
Any thoughts?
As always, many thanks John Howard
