Jan, inside that small hole is a spring loaded pin. Take a paper clip or
similar and push it into the hole. This will depress the pin enough so that
you can then pull the knobs off.

I have been very wary to slip in what are probably dumb questions.  However,

I'll plunge in with this dumb question.  

I am slowly progressing with the install of my interior.  I am replacing a 
badly damaged switch plinth.  In looking a the knobs I notice that each has
a 
little hole but no apparent fixture such as a hex nut.  How do I take off
the 
knobs?  Do I just pull them off?  I thought I should ask before I start 
yanking and mess something else up that I would have to repair.  I have done

that often enough.
