First, I'd like to offer belated thanks to all who responded to this
problem. I didn't feel like writing until I had followed your advice and
had something to report.
My first break came when I noticed the tire pressure was 35 psi all
around. No idea how it got that way, but there's no one to blame but me.
When I cranked it down to 27 front and 31 back, I still had the shimmy,
but at least the car was controllable.
Next, I followed your good advice and swapped tires, checked for bent
wheels and out of balance. Only problem was a rear tire out of balance and
fixing it didn't help.
Last step was to replace the shocks as mentioned in a previous message.
I love the Spax. They didn't cure the problem, but it has changed in
character. Intensity hasn't diminished, but the mph range where I notice
it is narrower. As for handling, its a different car, a much better one,
and I no longer hate driving it.
Next step is to have the alignment rechecked and to get it up on jack
stands so I can check for suspension problems by wiggling the tires. I
also plan to see if the rear shocks need topping up.
Thanks again.
John
