Frank, One question, does the tach read zero with the engine off?

If so, there is something seriously wrong. It may be fixable.
See http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/arhodes

This has a speedometer repair manual. The actual speed indicator
in the speedometer is just like the tachometer works. The tachometer just does
keep
count of total engine turns.

In short, there could be something binding between the magnet wheel and the
pointer
spindle or the "drag cup". If the magnet wheel is pushed too far forward
toward the dial,
it can induce too much drag on the drag cup and cause the indicator to read
high. It
can also physically hit the drag cup and make it move as well.

Let us know what you find inside yours!!!

-Tony

How can you calibrate the tachometer on a 79 Spitfire? My tach is showing
twice as high as it should at idle.
