Hi folks....
Thanks so much to all who have taken the time to help me with my starting
problem in my 76 TR6 either privately or on the list. After some
tinkering, it still won't start, but here's what I've checked so far:
1: Starter & starter solenoid... These are apparently in GWO since if I
jump the two contact points on the solenoid, the car turns over. As a last
resort, I may install a momentary-on switch between these two contacts so
that I can start the car until I fix the problem. As a point of info, on
the solenoid, there are three 'spade' contacts... one at 12:00 position
(when looking at it from the rear of the car), another at 9 and another at
about 7. The only contact 'occupied' is the one at 9. This is the one I
am shorting with the 'bolt' going into the center (or end) of the solenoid
to start the car.
2: Ignition switch: This also is apparently in GWO. With a multi meter
the contacts check out ok in each of the key positions.
3: Starter relay: If I knew where to look for this I would check it (if
there is a way to check it, that's question#1). My Bentley repair manual
shows that it should be on the drivers side fender, mounted with the horn
relay. But! in another area of the book, they show this same position as
holding the hazard relay. And! in another area, the overdrive relay, but
since my car lacks overdrive, I figure that's not there. When I press the
horn, I do hear a clicking in the 'horn relay', so I know that one of these
relays is indeed for the horn. In the other, I hear no clicking when I
turn on the hazards, and they work fine. When I turn the key to START, I
also do not hear a thing out of this mystery relay. So, now I am thinking
that if this IS the starter relay, it's bad. I'm about to call for a new
relay, but sort of wanted to find out if anyone agrees that this is
probably the problem. The relay is about $65, so I don't mind trying
it. Other checks: fuses OK, seatbelt interlock/warning already
disabled. Steve Wilkinson mentioned that on his 74 TR6 there is a switch
on the trans that has to engage before the car will start and this I have
yet to check in detail, but I did locate an unidentified wire running along
the bottom alongside the trans. That's tonight project.
BTW, thanks for the advice re the shock conversion, I'm going to hold off
on that based on the great info people have passed on. I'm loving the car
and loving the satisfaction of working on it myself!
Thanks everyone,
Blake Discher
