Ken,

I believe you are right - these sound like the later "snap-on" headlight
rims.  Run down to the hardware store and get a paint can lid opener
(about fifty cents).  This little jewel is just the ticket for grabbing
and snapping off the later headlight rims. You might want to wrap the
tool with electrical tape to prevent scratches to the paint in the
headlight area.
