I am using an OD trans from a '67 GT-6 in my '71 GT-6. The stop plate is held
in place with two flat head machine screws. The lateral shift lever travel
limit is a threaded stud with a jam nut that is adjusted so that the mechanism
will not go into reverse unless the lever is depresses. First, check if the
threaded stud is out of adjustment. When the shift lever is depressed the
threaded stud will pass underneath the stop plate. If the threaded stud passes
under the stop plate without your pressing down on the lever, check the
components in the shift lever ball / socket / detent spring. Once the snap ring
on the shift lever popped out of the groove and caused the same problem for me
(I put a tiny tack weld on the retainer to prevent a similar future occurrence).
Another time the plastic cup that is part of the ball and socket wore thru and
the spring that provides the resistance to pressing down on the shift lever was
greatly reduced - again it was easy to shift into reverse unintentionally.
