OK I have a problem -
The scenario is this. I have a Pre 60000 TR3 body tub, but I need to
turn it into a long door TR2 body tub. I know what to do - but there is
a problem with the tub itself. I have cut out the plenum chamber
aperture (where the front 'flap' fits) between the two wiper holes. I
have not cut all the way to the edges and the shape is like a cut off
triangle. I need to put a piece of steel in place of this cut out
because the early TR2s did not have them.
Unfortunately one of the DPOs of the tub managed to stretch some of the
metal in this area so that instead of a regular curve, there are
noticable 'wobbles' I don't want to cut the offending area out because
the form will be lost and I'm not good enough to fit a piece of steel
over such a large area.
So - I have the following kit - Arc (stick) welder, with carbon
eletrodes, MIG Welder, shrinking hammer (new) plus the usual bodywork
hammers and dollys. I don't have any gas welding kit, the only way I
have of heating the metal is by using the carbon electrodes with the
arc welder.
Now has anyone faced any similar problems ? If I use the shrinking
hammer, how good are they, do I need a 'slapper' or is there another
way to remove the 'wobbles' ?
Do I need to heat the metal when using the hammer or does it work cold ?
I don't want to use large amounts of filler(bondo) and when I press the
offending areas
the metal gives then flaps back this would make the filler drop off
anyway after a while.
I can do most types of bodywork but I haven't had this type of problem
before so I would be grateful for info from anyone who has overcome a
similar one !
