I don't have a TR6, but I've had a lot of British cars over the years.  What
can happen is that the rocker arms can wear where they contact the valve and
make an irregular surface.  Adjustment is difficult with a flat feeler gauge
because of it, so you can get too large a setting even tho the feeler gauge
is tight.
