One possibility is that your first relay was actually a 'horn' relay,
which may not have been designed for continuous duty.  I had a somewhat
similar experience years ago after I rewired the headlights on Dad's
TR3A with "universal horn relays", which the parts store assured me
"were the same thing" as headlight relays.  (Probably explains why that
store went out of business soon after <g>)
