If the TR6 uses the same selector mechanism has the TR4.... and I believe
it does..... then you are definitely supposed to "lift up" on the shifter
to engage reverse. It says so in the TR4 Owner's Handbook. Occasionally
you will find it difficult to engage reverse even with the lift up move.
The procedure to clear it is to release the handbrake, if engaged, and
cycle through 1st and 2nd, lift up again and shift into reverse. This was
normal for brand new cars.
I have had these parts apart during my transmission rebuild and it is part
of the design.
