Keith,
Please don' take it as a flame. It wasn't meant as a chastise of your
reporting of what you were told, just a little clarification of the
information. You needn't feel that YOU were in error or foolish in ANY
way. The purpose of any such post (at least mine) are to clear up any
misunderstandings. If I err in a posting (and believe me I have) I am
usually corrected very quickly and rightly so. I certainly don't wish to
give out erroneous info any more than I would hope anyone else! So keep on
posting and inquiring. That way we all benefit, and hopefully learn a
little more along the way! I try as hard as I can to not appear
condescending or a "know it all" but as you can tell, writing is NOT my
forte! So forgive me if I came across that way-

Which brings about an interesting commentary. Before I installed the
Allison/Crane systems I had built a little capacitive discharge system of
my own, and like the MSD it used the points as a low current switch. Since
the points don't wear out I practically forgot about them until one day,
whilst driving home I noticed the car backfire more and more upon
deceleration. This was not the nice burble of the cam but a pronounced
backfire. Then I would start doing it at random while driving! Upon
examination I found that the RUBBING BLOCK had become worn down so much
that the points were barely opening, causing the system to fire when it
wasn't supposed to. One advantage of the optical (or magnetic) trigger is
that there is nothing to wear out!
