Dean,
        The scenario you give of the backyard DIY v. the "green" repair shop is
valid and certainly makes a bigger difference than cartridge v. spin-on.
However, I was suggesting that it should be considered that you are using
and disposing of more "stuff" (metal and trapped oil). If you reduce the
volume of stuff that is purchased, hopefully less makes it to the landfill.
I wasn't meaning to start a controversy, rather I was attempting to remind
people that if all else is equal, add to the equation the differences in
"containers". One gets  reused, one goes to the trash or with luck to the
recyclers.
