Trevor,
What you say sounds like starter problems. I think that either the
Bendix (I think this is what you are calling solenoid) is sticking or
the starter is not turning fast enough to kick it out far enough to
engage the flywheel gear.
If you tried a different starter and got the same symptom, perhaps there
is some corrosion somewhere in the cable somewhere between the starter
and the battery. Of course, it may be a coincidence and you tried
another faulty starter. I have gotten "bad from the box" rebuilt ones.
I'd try cleaning all contacts from the solenoid (the electrical unit),
the battery and the starter. Hopefully that will fix things.
