TR4 Grille - What Color Behind?

Listers,

Getting down to the nitty gritty... can't put a new engine in an old engine
bay.  I am painting my engine bay and and front piece color coat today and
don't know what color is supposed to be painted behind the grille.

There are signs of it being painted flat black in a mask behind the grille.
Is this normal or should it be Signal Red, in my case.
