Ian, It sounds as though your throw-out bearing is begining to go bad. The high pitched whine is probably the sound created by the bearing not spinning properly when pushed against the pressure plate. After it warms up, the bearing probably begins to turn more freely thus subduing or eliminating the whine. You more than likely need to replace the bearing.
