I think I got my answer. Thanks to the responses from the folks on this list. It makes sense. They are necessary to allow for differences in movement between the different components of a moving car body, frame, and engine. There are flexible braided connectors that can probably be made up to accomplish the same thing, but for now I'll stick with the original design using the rubber tubing.
