There is a rule of thumb (literally) for hand cranking any engine.
It's natural to grip any handle with four fingers round one side and your
thumb over the top.
With an engine, this is wrong. If the engine starts, the handle can go with
it. This will dislocate your thumb.
So, unless you really want to have a thumb that points towards your elbow,
make sure that all your digits are one one side of the handle. In other
words, cup your hand so that the handle lies across your palm AND across
your thumb.
A good engine should start first try; some people crank the motor first with
the ignition off to get the fuel through.
