Subject: Installing Splined Joint Nipples

Hi, Wayne,

No answers appeared but I did receive some suggestions from a Triumph
specialist.

1. If you use grease nipples which are too small, the grease will take
forever to apply.
2. Larger grease nipples could unbalance the shaft, so use plugs, fitting
nipples only for greasing (as per uni joints/trunnions).

And my own thoughts.....

1. Push splined section as far into driveshaft as possible, then measure
overall length. Put the parts side by side so that the maximum depth to
which the inner shaft goes in can be marked on the outer. The difference (if
any) between that and the end of the female splined 'tube' can be measured
with a piece of straight rod. The point of this is to avoid fitting the
nipples so that the grease is pumped directly onto the splined shaft.
Putting the grease into the void at the end of the shaft would give it a
fighting chance of lubricating more than one spline.

2. When greasing, remove/loosen the fastening on the smaller end of the
rubber gaiter, to avoid blowing it off with grease pressure.

This is as far as I've gone so far. If I get the arrangement up and running,
I'll post dimensions, etc. Bear in mind, these will be for the sedan; the
TRs' shafts are probably a different length.

Let me know if you get there first.

Regards,
 Dave Hill.

David,

Did you get your question answered about fitting grease nipples
to the splined joints (posted on 1/17/99 to TR list)?

I've got my rear driveshafts out now and am considering add grease
nipples also.

Please let me know what you found out.

Thanks,
