The motor runs! I've been doing a frame off restoration
of my TR250 for 2 years now. I have the chassis built up,
ready for the body, and I started the motor this weekend!
It started right away. Once the fuel pump pressurized the
fuel line, she sputtered and sprang to life. Everything
seems good so far, with the exception of a small oil leak
from the sump pan gasket. Compression readings on the
cylinders are all in the vicinity of 175lbs/in**2. After
running the motor for a few minutes I pulled off the valve
cover and re-adjusted the valves. They tightened up marginally
after the valves found a home in their new seats. I was
concerned that the stainless steel header and exhaust pipe
that I bought from Rimmer Bros would be too loud. But the
tone and loudness is right on. Just right for long trips.
All she needs is a sump pan gasket and a proper tune-up
which leads me to a couple of questions.
1) Does anyone know if the sump can be dropped while the
motor is bolted down on it's mounts,
2) The distributor vacuum retard will be blocked off - I plan
to run only with the vacuum advance. Does anyone know what the
timing at idle should be with this set-up,
3) Does anyone have experience with Waxoyl? I'd like to
rust proof the box sections of my frame but I'm afraid that
waxoyl will turn my frame into a dripping, oozing mess.
Exhaust clamps... Some of you have mentioned using band style
exhaust clamps. My exhaust pipe is 2.25" outside diameter.
My motorcycle clamps work just fine. If your interested in high
quality band style clamps for 2 plus inch (outside diameter
pipes) check your local BMW motorcycle dealer. Ask for the
clamps used on the header pipe of the R1100GS. These items
are real beauts and are reasonably priced at $15.00 a piece.
