The type of ring you are refering to is a 3 or 4 piece oil control ring.
There are 2 narrow scraper rings separated by the "corrigated" ring spacer
and sometimes backed up buy an expansion or tensioner piece behind the
whole works. These rings were developed for high rpm , severe duty use and
are ideal for today's driving conditions. There are two ways to make the
spacer ring , and one of them can allow the scraper rings to wobble. I've
had good luck with Hastings rings, but I suggest you track down a ring by
the name of Deves. I belive they are Swedish. They are $$$$$ and worth
every penny if the motor is going to be a high performance engine.
Wholesale 10 yrs. ago was $50. 2 to 3 times what hastings cost. Only worth
it for a HP motor though.
Now to give credit. You guys remember Hardy Prentice? He won the
runoffs
in his TR3 some time ago. When I was just starting to build my first motor
(in 1976) I volunteered to pit crew for him at PIR in conjunction with a
friend of mine who's dad knew him . I didn't know anything (Hey kid , do
you mind NOT leaning on the race car??) But hey to be sixteen again...
Anyway, I got a chance to ask him what made his TR3 engine so fast. He
looked into my ignorant sixteen year old eyes, realized I wouldn't be able
to use the info against him during his race career, or just maybe thought
that he help set me on the right path, and said three things- Deves rings
, Redline oil , and Elgin cams . That and a $1200 Huffaker head. He was so
very right . Thanks Hardy.
