I thought about this and wondered why not make them all short and thus put
the release on the "far" side of the car for the left hookers. And of course
that thought led to the idea which you have expressed below.

Therefore, now it does not seem so strange that the hood (bonnet) release is
where it is. Yet another interesting quirk in any event...
