I was faced with the same problem this fall. I used one 3/8th inch
bolt through the starter motor hole, and the other three were the
smaller 5/16ths tapped holes.
I used Grade eight bolts and nuts. You have to fuss for ever with
spacers tubes, washers to get it the four arms just right. Nervous about
all the cantelevered weight, I even pressed in bushings into the holes
of the engine stand arms. This reduced the size of the hole the bolt
went through.
There was a lot of discussion on the list about this, finally I had to
strike out on my own. Yes it took a month, but it worked great.
