Ah, memories... when I first joined this list 3 years ago (doesn't seem
that long), I mentioned my first long distance drive in a TR3. The
summer after I graduated from high school I took off from Springfield,
Illinois (200 mi s of the end/begin point of US66) and drove to LA. It
was a spur of the moment decision that ended up with me staying in LA
for a year until Uncle Sam said "hey you!".
(The trip was done in reverse the following July to make it to my
grandmothers 95th birthday bash)
The highlight of the year was when a friend from work (a brit no less)
and I decided to take an extended holiday (memorial day '66) and drove
the '3 from LA up 101 to Vancouver then hwy 1 to Calgary, then south
through Butte, MT (I had an uncle living there at the time) to Denver
then west back over (through) the mountains to Las Vegas and back to LA.
Over all we drove almost 5,000 miles; missed two weeks of work (I got
fired, he didn't) and had one heck of time. I ran into Phil in
Washington about 4 years ago and we were ready to make another go at it.
Of course, I didn't have the '3 anymore and I am not sure if ca. 50 year
bodies could handle it.
Unfortunately, the pix from that trip along with others that recorded a
lot of memories went south somewhere along the way.
But, i'll tell you that for scenic drives, coming up over a mountain
crest early in the morning to see the sun "rise" is hard to beat.
