Subject: TR-4 rear main seal
Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 21:35:22 EST
Hi
I am in the process of a frame up restoration of the 65 TR-4 that I have owned
since 1981, but have run into a few problems toward the very final stages.
When I fired up the rebuilt engine I noticed quite a bit of oil leaking out of
the rear of the pan. I was very carful aligning the crank/main seal when I
rebuilt the motor and when I dropped the pan I was able to convince myself
that the leak is coming from the felt strips along the side of the main seal
and not past the crank i.e. there was no oil on the flywheel or back side of
the plate below the motor and the bellhousing. So I revisited the manual and
it says to soak the felt seals in " sealing compound" Moss say to pack them
in dry, the local TR guy says hylomar. Any experience with this? Initialy
they were soaked in oil and packed in solid.
Thanks
