I don't know, I think it's an Ausie term for us!!!  Any Aussies know what it
stands for, probably something to do with us whinging!!! :-)

As a kiwi I'll take a shot at it.
POM; or Prisoner Of the Motherland.

The way the story (as told to me) goes:

The original use of Australia by the Brits was as a penal colony.
The poor sods who'd been transported were known as 'Prisoners of the
Motherland' or POMs.
As time went by, human nature being what it is, saw the batch of 1st and 2nd
generation 'Aussies' and the term POM began to be used in reference to the
British in general, not just the deported prisoners.
