One area that can be overlooked as a cause of stiff steering is old, hard,
tires. A couple of years ago I replaced the 15+ year old 165R14 Michelins
on my daughters MGB with 185/70R14. I was concerned that going to wider
tires would make the stiff steering worse, but when I drove it away from
the tire shop, I literally thought something had broken when I made the
first turn because it steered so much easier.
If you've got ancient tires, it's probably worth replacing them even if
there is still tread on them.
