I not a petro-engineer either, however Chris staggered around in little
cirles with his hands in the air, sort of Quasimodo without the bells, when
I told him I was still on gear oil. I don't think that the viscosity is on
an absolute scale, i.e. 90 is not 3 times thicker that 30, but I do believe
it is considerably more viscous than straight motor oil. There is a rather
learned article in the VTR maintenance pages written by a petro-type. I
haven't the time to check it out now, but there it is.
