GT6-3 Z-S carbs: why too lean?

Hello, orb.

Recently I had the aforementioned carburetors on the bench to replace
a torn diaphragm (ah, how that brings back memories of my first child),
and install Grose jets.  Now, with these bad boys back on Mr. GT,
I'm having trouble enriching the mixture sufficiently.  What might
account for this?  Could this mean I incorrectly set the float level
when installing the Grose jets?
