Hi,
I'm a new list subscriber with some questions. I'm finishing up a Spitfire
1500 engine rebuild and have installed dual SU HS-4s. When first starting
up the engine, I noticed a lot of fuel leaking from the float bowls. I
removed the float bowl cover and put some thread sealer on the Grose-Jets
and this seemed to stop the leak. Seems the float was closing the
Grose-Jet, and the fuel kept pumping *around* the Grose-Jet. I have
reinstalled a mechanical fuel pump which I purchased from (I think)
Vic-Brit, so I assume it's correct for my engine. How much pressure is
this pump putting out, and is it something I need to worry about?
Now, however, I'm finding a bit of fuel leaking around the net securing the
jet in the bottom of the carb body (both of them). In my SU manual, I see
that there is a washer of some sort. Does this need replacing? Will
thread sealer on the "jet retaining nut" (for lack of a better term) take
care of this?
I saw one of the posts about the SU cars and vent tubes that someone else
posted. I have my carbs vented into the charcoal canister, but this won't
be good if the carb is pumping fuel in there. Merely venting the bowls to
atmosphere doesn't seem like the right solution. I think fuel control is
the right solution, but I don't know how to do that if my pump is running
at a too high pressure. Thoughts?
One final question - I've seen some posts about these BMIHT Certificates.
What are these? How do I get one? What's the benefit? I have paperwork
from the original owner (I'm owner #2) and the original selling dealership.
Do these certificates document the car from factory to dealer?
Thanks,
George Parker
