Hi all,
Well, I thought I had my TR3 generator problems solved last night. I
installed the rebuilt unit, re-polarized it by connecting the
positive terminal of the battery to the field and ran the test
as specifed in section 4(a) of the factory manual and got readings
around -12 volts. Connected everything back up, started the car and
the ammeter was registering on the high end of the scale. Things
looked just great.
However, this morning on the way to work with the lights on I looked
down and the ammeter was indicating that there was a big drain on
the battery. Turning off the head lights caused a large part of the
drain to go away but the meter was still reading lower than usual.
Ran the same test, 4(a), on the gen again tonight and I can't seem
to get more than .25 volts out of it. Checked the resistance of the
field windings as the manual suggests and I get a reading of around
6.4 ohms. I think this should be close enough to the 6.1 ohms the
manual suggests.
One thing which is a bit strange is that the ignition warning light
hasn't been coming on through all this. I just went out and wiggled
it and now the light seems to be working. Does this light need to
be functioning in order for the generator to work?
I'm at a lost as to what to check next and am open to any suggestions
on where to go from here.
Thanks,
Drew
