No, as you are inferring, octane is a historical
term. The effective number is still called the
octane reading, but it's like reading pressure
in inches of mercury even for things that don't
involve mercury.

About the only thing you are ever likely to actually
notice is that car MIGHT start a bit easier since theoretically
the fuel/air wants to be ignited a little more
than high octane gas.
Whether this will ever actually make a real
noticeable difference is probably doubtful.
