Ken,
This is an opinion only, but one made with just a little thought.

Headliners are typically (if not wholely) made of porous material
because they need to breathe i order that the surface underneath doesn't
accumulate moisture.  Even vinly headliners have prepunched holes evenly
distributed throughout.

The other consideration is weight.  The first order of business is to
keep it up.  Unless the selected leather is extremely thin, its weight
would make it extremely difficult to suspend.

Just a few passing thoughts.
