Putting the car on stands is not necessary when you are checking
the end-float only.  To do this, remove the fan from the crank-extension,
mount a dial-gauge to the front of the block and measure the fore-aft
motion of the crank-pully.  You need to remove the fan only because
there is insufficient space to mount the dial gauge.

The Bentley suggestion of putting the car on jackstands assumes that
you are replacing the thrust washers, and have already removed the
oil pan...  Then it is just a matter of mounting a dial-gauge against one
of the crank webs and measuring the fore-aft movement.
