I think you pull the negative (or earth) terminal off the battery and
place the - on the battery, and the + on the wire.  (in series)

You can also use a test light.  If you get 12V or a glowing tester, then
you have a voltage leak.

At least, that's how to do it according to my Chevy diagnostics manual.
They also suggest that if the bulb glows, you touch the wire to the
battery to "wind the clock" (some radios have a constant drain too).

Yes, Majordomo keeps an archive but they're not very easy to browse.  I
try to put recurring questions in the FAQ.  If in doubt, ask.
